Cricket. AFL. Rugby. When you think of sport in Australia, there’s only one venue that springs to mind for Melbourne sports fans—the famous MCG, or Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Constructed in 1853 for the Melbourne Cricket Club, the MCG is the largest stadium in the Southern Hemisphere. It has played a pivotal role in the development of international cricket, hosting both the first Test match in 1877 and the first One Day International in 1971, both played between Australia and England.
The MCG is also a cornerstone of Australian rules football, having hosted Australian Football League (AFL) matches since 1859. As a reoccurring host of the AFL Grand Final—the world's most-attended league championship event—the MCG continues to be a symbol of Australian sporting culture.
Now, you can raise a glass of your favourite beer, snack on your pie of choice, and catch a match at home with Suburban Icons’ classic ode to the incomparable MCG.
